Building Confidence in a Global Language

On January 30-31, Mentari Indonesia Islamic School successfully held its highly anticipated English Camp program. Opened promptly at 8:00 a.m. by the Education Director, the program was designed with a clear goal: to motivate students to speak English with confidence.

As we know, English is an international language used globally. However, we realize that learning a foreign language can be challenging. Therefore, through this camp, we focused on building bravery rather than perfection, creating a fun atmosphere where students felt encouraged to speak up.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

This year’s camp involved 66 energetic fifth-grade students and ten dedicated teachers. The participants were enthusiastic and curious from the very beginning.

The students experienced English in a completely different way. Instead of standard lessons, they tried to communicate with each other in English, prioritizing communication over perfect grammar.

During these sessions, students practiced conversations in groups and learned new idioms to broaden their vocabulary. They also engaged in creative activities, such as making crafts, where they practiced explaining the steps of making key chains in English. To keep the energy high, various game sessions were interspersed throughout the learning blocks.

The Native Speaker Experience

A major highlight of the camp was the session with a native speaker. This session was designed to refresh the students and give them the opportunity to hear and practice natural English pronunciation.

Although some students felt nervous at first, the speaker had a special way of making them feel relaxed and daring enough to speak. It was a valuable experience that helped bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world usage.

A Night to Remember

The English Camp was an overnight event, meaning students spent the night at school, which fostered independence and camaraderie. The program concluded on Saturday, January 31st, leaving many students with a newfound interest in developing their English skills further.

We are also grateful for the tremendous support and appreciation received from the parents.

Looking to the Future

While the camp has ended, the learning journey continues. We are committed to motivating our students to improve their English so that as they grow up, the language is no longer strange to them. We want our students to communicate easily with the global community and help build a better world together.

See you next year, guys!
