On January 17th-18th, Mentari Indonesia School succeeded in holding an English Camp program. This is our debut program as we have never conducted before. This program was aimed to motivate students to speak English. As we know that English is one of the international languages that is commonly used by many people in the world. Through this program, we hope that the students dare to speak. We created an atmosphere where the students feel challenged to speak English. This program involved all students from fifth grade of Mentari Elementary School around 70 students and 10 teachers. All of them were happy and curious to join the program.
During the program, they learned to speak in certain places and practice in groups through conversation. They also learned to write English words through the listening section. While learning, they had games sessions so they didn’t get bored. There was also a session with a guest teacher to refresh students. Then, the students had a simple fun cooking class to vary the activities. They tried to explain the steps of making something and ended by enjoying fruit soup. They also spent the night together with friends and tried to speak English as well as they could.
Many students were interested in this program since it could help them to develop their English. Their parents also gave big support and appreciation to this program. They hope that this program will be an annual program, of course, with some improvement.
As English teachers, we realize that learning English is not easy because English is a foreign language. However, it doesn’t mean that we stop learning. We should motivate students to improve their English. And when they grow up, English is not something strange. They will easily communicate with the global population and together build the world.
